Purpose

Aerial view of Christian Science Church Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts was founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy “...to commemorate the word and works of our master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.”
(Church Manual, page 17)

Core Beliefs

  • Christian Scientists believe that the word of the Bible is the guide to eternal Life.
  • They believe in one loving, infinite and ever-present God. Everyone is created in His image, and that image is spiritual.
  • They believe that God forgives and destroys sin and that spiritual understanding casts out evil.
  • Christian Scientists believe in Christ Jesus as the Son of God. They also believe anyone can be saved and healed through the presence of Christ and God in their life.

Discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, Christian Science is a universal, practical system of spiritual, prayer-based Christian healing, available and accessible to everyone. It is fully explained in her primary text on spirituality and healing, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. The principles of Christian Science can be found on pages 496-497.
